Jerry Channels Jimmy Page: The 38th Anniversary of a Truly Rockin' Show (Binghamton, November 6, 1977)

It was The Eleven, my 11th Dead show.  And for many years, it was my favorite show to day.  That is saying much since the Dead have officially released six full, and the best elements of a seventh of my first ten shows.  [ Note 10/24/77, this will soon be Dave's Pick 26, or the 7th consecutive 1977 show I saw since April 30 with an official GD release 4/30, 5/7, 5/28, 9/3, 11/4, 11/5, 11/6]

But Binghamton, November 6, 1977 remains to this day, a true highlight  of my live Grateful Dead Experience.  It wasn't until Betty Boards that I thought some of the other 77 eras were as good as my 8th and last show of this magical year. Amazing Jim Anderson photos of this night

Playing In The Band (Reprised): A Surprising Analysis

Even in chaos like the Grateful Dead, this is usually a method to their madness. Take for example, the creation of Playing In the Band (Reprise).

In Blog Post http://gratefulseconds.blogspot.com/2015/10/complete-list-of-my-playing-in-band.html, I noted 117 Playing In he Band sandwiches. Each of the 117, occurred, within the same show.
30 Trips selects for 1984, the famous August 12, 1984 show from Augusta, Maine as the initial location of what Dead Base 11 calls "Playing Reprise". 17 more Reprises follow over a nearly 10 year period, and what is interesting is that in 16 of the 18 cases, the ending of Playing completes a version of earlier in the week, often the previous show or beginning of a run. In 11 of the 16 cases, the song is complete in the same city.  In five, the Dead complete Playing in a different city.
Someone in the band was having fun with the fans. Since so many versions occurred during the Bruce Hornsby years, I blame that prankster for this.  He was always motivating the boys. The surprise in the analysis is that the Dead only "forgot" twice to open the jaw before ending the song later. Almost, like they were tracking it (Bobby's job?, Phil's?).

For this analysis, I eliminated the "April Fools" version in Portland (also Maine!) on 3-31-1985 where the band inverts the song, playing Reprise, then the main verse into Day Tripper as April Fools Day nears. The August 1984 version is playing now

Weather Reports, Preludes and Let It Grow

2015 had been a great year for the weather.  LA is still 90 degrees in November (nice at the time, scary for long term). But it's also been a great year for Dead fans of Weather Report Suite and Let It Grow.

First was the release of Providence as the 1978 selection in the 30 Trips Around The Sun Box Set

with the extremely rare show closing WRS Prelude>Dark Star>Eyes of the World>Playing in the Band. Rare stand-alone Prelude, rare full complete Playing In The Band show closer.

The first five WRS Prelude were all pre-Weather Report Suites (and never again without the full suite)
