Sweet Home Alabama May 17, 1977

So if you lived in "Bama in May 1977 on consecutive nights you could have seen Bread, the Dead, and Led Zep. Wow. Didn't know that. Show was originally scheduled April 18, but moved to after the tour.  Half Step   Scarlet Fire    Estimated Terrapin Playing Wharf Rat Playing.  Hopefully you have the version from the first May 1977 box set, but if not listen here

This was the very first time the Grateful Dead graced the Alabama stage, this time in Tuscaloosa but they would return four more times in 1978, 1980, and 1995 (twice) to Birmingham.

You already know this show and since its May 1977 (and forty years ago tomorrow), it's solid as a rock.

Coast to Coast FM Broadcasts 1971: LA and Boston

Late 1971 was a rocking time for the Dead, note Dave's Picks 22 Felt Forum as a recent Signpost to new space. Here is a quick coast-to-coast view of two shows that played on the radio November 20, 1971 from Pauley in UCLA (about a half mile from where I sit) and Dec 1, 1971 at the Boston Music Hall. I've added a lot of flavor surrounding this performances. And some music

LA gets a nice Truckin Other One cowboy song thing while Boston will let you hear a nice Cryptically mellow piece from Dec 1 and extra nice Not Fade Away slice of life from the FM night in Boston

Southern Dead Rock, May 1977 Style

Here's two more May 1977 gems which you probably know something about. Southern shows, at least Southern compared to me in New England at the time.

Richmond: The Dead hit a Mosque in Richmond and do a typical mind crushing second set complete with a split The Other One.  Good reason Dave picked this as his first release. Dave's Picks 1

Scarlet Begonias ->
Fire On The Mountain

Estimated Prophet ->
He's Gone ->
Drums ->
The Other One ->
Wharf Rat ->
The Other One ->
The Wheel ->
Around And Around

Baltimore, which did  not sell out had a killer first set and a nice Terrapin>Estimated which you might like to hear. We can share itunes, we can share the flacs  5-25   5-26  And as usual some pretty funny local reviews of the band. Since the band is coming to Virginia, of course there have to be psychedelic references from like 1963.  And the reviewers again gets some of the song titles incorrect.
But in May 1977, so did I :)

Buffalo: After The Morning Dew, May 9, 1977

Help On the Way>Slipknot>Franklin's Tower is in its finest form on the night after Cornell.
Some folks like to add this as a "second encore" to Cornell.  Buffalo is also the home of the first Estimated Prophet > new song, which it did forever starting here. Boston was the last standalone Estimated.  Have fun kiddies, some goodies are here.

There were always good shows in Buffalo, 1970 with the Sympathy, 1973 in March, Shea Theater 1979 Dark Star followed by the November 1979 show which appears largely on Road Trips 1.1.

Happy Birthday Buffalo

Snobs from the Coasts: Don't Miss the Scarlet Fire of Chi-Town May 12-13, 1977

Two other interesting Chicago Shows. Despite their inclusion in the first May 1977 Box, these still are lesser known, but fit right in with the Spring 1977 sensations.  Still the Scarlet Fire on the 13th is top shelf. East and West Coast snobs (like me :) ) need to listen to more from the MidWest

May 12 is so good it was released twice

As Bonus of June 1977 Wintrerland Complete

Soon you won't need to buy tickets
