Ordinarily, I'd tell you to read the FAQ. But this seems like an
opportune time to repost .t's top 25 tapes of the moment, from a
  moment over two years ago!

I had so much fun following (and commenting) on the responses to my top
ten list -- and there really were many thoughful and reasonable
contributions -- that I thought I'd keep the ball rolling and lengthen the
list.

This was a much harder task. First of all, I've never really thought past
a top ten before. Secondly, once you get past the first twenty or so, the
list really becomes arbitrary (ha! as if this whole effort isn't just a
wee bit capricious). You could really argue that most of 1974 belongs on
this list. One the other hand, with the exception of 8/6/71 (and maybe
4/5/71 and 8/24/71), I still feel strongly that no 1971 show deserves a
spot here. Note, however, that -- lordy! -- I've put one 1977 show in the
top 25, though probably not the one most folks would pick.

I know folks will question the inclusion of the 1975 Great American Music
Hall show, but listen again: it's an almost-perfect show with an extremely
high-energy level. Help/Slip/Franklin's, Eyes Of The World, ahhh!

And to everyone who has emailed me to ask, "hey, what about <insert
favorite show here>? What are you, nuts?" -- remember, this is no one's
list but my own. It's highly personal and based on my peculiar taste. This
ain't science, folks!

Well, what the hell, here's the next installment in this fool's errand:

        Contenders to the throne:
        ===========================
What do we do about these? These are shows from which we only have
30- to 45-minute surviving fragments. They're hotter than hell, and if
the complete shows are anywhere near what circulates they deserve a
spot on the list. As they stand, however, they're too short to evaluate.

    04/24/70 Mammoth Gardens, Denver, CO
09/29/69a Cafe Au Go-Go, New York, NY
09/17/70 Fillmore East, New York, NY

OK, gang, let's have at it ...
