Garcia said “We were great for seconds on end.” I was lucky to see Jerry play for about 1,000,000 seconds exactly. Thanks for your 1,000,000 views here . Dave Davis wrote this blog for 500 posts and 5 years from 2015 to 2019. Contact me at twitter @gratefulseconds

Don't Murder Me: Only Show in New Hampshire

Originally posted 1-16-16

In the backwash of Hanover, the Grateful Dead came to town.

It was May 5, 1978 and it would be the only time that the boys ever played New Hampshire in the 30 year history of the band. 3,499 other deadheads and Dartmouth students were there.

Edit 11-14-2017. My pal Craig MacLean took this photo of Phil, pre-show, who had walked into the crowd to visit a friend high up somewhere. Cool huh.

Sirius decided to play the show this morning as i drove to work immediately after I finished my blog post on the Beatles songs, s I had to write my New Hampshire piece because the Dire Wolf sounded so great in my car (best version ever played in New Hampshire). I think Jerry loved to play Direwolf especially when the Dead were in the woods like here and on November 5, 1977 in upstate New York. I loved when it was played second in the set (or open like in the 12-31-80 acoustic set Blog piece here)

This was my first show after starting college (Englishtown was the day BEFORE college) and I attended along with Jimmy Roux, Mike Barr ( i think), Katie Moody and I did run into Andover deadhead Lundy Bancroft the set break (not hard with only 3,500)

It was followed by Cassidy, Candyman, and later a heavy set-end Passenger, Brown Eyed Women and Lazy Lightning/Supplication, all greatest ones ever in New Hampshire. Ok, joking aside, this is a well played and great sounding show. It was my 12th Dead concert after 3 in 1976 and 8 in 1977, and although it might only rank 11th out of my first dozen shows in terms of my enjoyment, that speaks to the greatness of 1976 and 1978 and should not lessen the fact that this show rocked!  Thanks to Charlie Miller and his band of mischief elves that get these boards so he can do his magic on them.Archive Flac

The archive comments include "one of my most memorable shows", "listen to Phil go up one side of NFA and come back down the other", "Werewolves for Cinco De Mayo?" and "best Estimated I've ever heard".  This is indeed a boss show.

Don't forget the second set Bertha>Good Lovin, Estimated>Eyes>my first of 69 Drums>Spaces?NFA>Stella and of course the encore which you hear now.  I only got to hear Werewolves twice, this night and a week later at the 5-11-78 Springfield "Mescaline" show, which were the 4th and 6th versions of nine that Spring between April 19 and May 17.  The Dead would only play it three more times on Halloweens 1985, 1990, and 1991.  The 1985 version opened the show, the rest were all encores.

I recall the building at Dartmouth (Thompson Arena) was small, new (build in 1975)  and sounded good.

The FLACs and the MPs are here. Enjoy listen. Rinse. Repeat.

Day After the Dead Blow Away Cleveland: More Mellow in Rochester November 21 1978

In November 1978, I had to keep leaving Maine to go to shows, two in Boston on the 13-14, heading down to Providence for the long drive out to Rochester ( remember the long ride with Rick Sullivan and John from Providence in the cold and the snow) and then a few days later coming to New Haven for the cancelled show.`Best show I heard all month was the 11-24 show on the radio.

This was certainly not as good as the 1977 version, but there was an outstanding Deal and great local coverage in the Rochester D&C.

Closing of Winterland, Play Until 7AM, Dark Star Returns, "Best New Year's Ever" December 31, 1978

40th birthday of what many think is the best New Year's Eve show ever.
This is considered one of the most important Grateful Dead shows ever, the last show at Winterland, December 31, 1978 when the Dead broke out a dream third set of  Dark Star>The Other One>Dark Star>Wharf Rat>St Stephen>Good Lovin' to cap an outstanding show.  Here are the tunes

There is also a nice midnight first set opening with Sugar Magnolia>Scarlet Begonias>Fire on the Mountain that sandwiches back into Sunshine Daydream.

There is a lot written about this show and many beautiful photos and official DVD release.
The Blues Brothers and the New Riders opened the show and the Dead were on the radio and the TV

Amazing this show is only rankled #2 for 1978 behind the July 8 show at Red Rocks.  While I saw six New Year's shows from 1980-1985, this is the one I wish I could have seen the most and it's usually ranked top 12-31 show in informal polls.

I was at a party in Portland, ME that evening trying to get an update from my gf in Marin, but since the Dead didn't even start until 3AM east coast time, I'd didn't get the Dark Star info until sometime in January.

The bonus disc included with the 2003 4 CD release is here

San Diego Golden Hall, December 27, 1978

As a usual warm up for Winterland's last, the Dead played shows late in the year ending in Dallas, San Diego and UCLA.  Forty years ago tonight, they rocked Golden Hall. The review of the show is hilarious featuring such tunes as Keep on Dancin' and Move Away

40 Years Ago: Popular FM Broadcast from Passiac, NJ 1978-11-24; Garcia Gets ill, Band Gets iller

40 Years Ago Tonight was a famous show at the Capitol in Passiac that was broadcast by a number of FM stations including   WNEW, WBCN   and later a  King Biscuit Flower Hour as well.
See http://deadessays.blogspot.com/2011/02/grateful-dead-fm-broadcasts.html  for more 411.
You can listen here

I listened to this show with my brother Ralphie and Jimmy Roux and Mike Barr and Juliet as I recall  as we were driving in a wild snowstorm down towards New Haven, CT where we had tickets for the next night. I also listened to it many times as it was one, like most radio broadcasts, easy to obtain.

In 1977, I was able to score one ticket in a five night Palladium run, but by 1978 no luck for a one-off at the Cap, thus our slightly shorter two day drive from Maine to the Haven.

With the FM and the King Biscuit and later the Video this is one of the most heard shows of 1978, which many put in the top-5 of the year or better.

The second set has a very cool set list with the Miracle>Good Lovin, reprised from Saturday Night Live two weeks earlier and an Estimated>Shakedown followed by Ollin Arrageed > Fire On The Mountain > Sugar Magnolia.  Unfortunately Jerry starts to really lose his voice amidst this resulting in a number of cancelled shows but the band is rocking this night.

This is really set two
Jack Straw  Sugaree  Me And My Uncle> Big River  Stagger Lee Passenger  Candyman
New Minglewood Blues  From The Heart Of Me Loser  The Promised Land

This is really set one
Second Set
I Need A Miracle > Good Lovin, a SNL reprise,  Friend Of The Devil
Estimated> Shakedown Street> Drums> Ollin Arrageed > Fire On The Mountain > Sugar Magnolia
