Garcia said “We were great for seconds on end.” I was lucky to see Jerry play for about 1,000,000 seconds exactly. Thanks for your 1,000,000 views here . Dave Davis wrote this blog for 500 posts and 5 years from 2015 to 2019. Contact me at twitter @gratefulseconds

Jerry Garcia Band 15-Show East Coast November 1993 Tour Grabs $4 Million

Happy Birthday Jerry #77.  I'll hang with you in about 20.  Weir will still be playing 250 nights at year then.

Typically when I saw the Jerry Garcia Band the audience size was maybe a few hundred and some times 2 thousand or so.  Just released Garcia Live 11 id from a bigger era

But late era Jerry Garcia Band grew to arena size, specifically in the three giant East Coast tours in September 1989, November 1991 and the biggest one he ran in November 1993 when 15 shows averaged more than 11,000 tickets sold per gig for a cool $4 million in gross.  Knowing Jerry you probably netted $2 million and split it evenly with the band. :)  JGMF has some very cool detail to the 1993 tour including http://jgmf.blogspot.com/search/label/1993 for everything and what I think is the coolest item the November 1993 tour, the tourbook http://jgmf.blogspot.com/2018/01/the-hypothesis-is-wong-long-live.html  This thing is way cool.

GarciaLive 11 from Providence can be bought from the Garcia Family Here https://www.garciafamilyprovisions.com/dept/garcialive-vol-11?cp=640_105645

Check this Tourbook out from JGMF see link  http://jgmf.blogspot.com/2018/01/the-hypothesis-is-wong-long-live.html

JGB's After Midnight>Eleanor Rigby>After Midnight Reigns Supreme in Oswego February 17, 1980

JGB Brought It This Cold Night in Upstate New York with After Midnight and an Eleanor Rigby sandwich and also Positively Fourth Street, Catfish John, Deal, Let It Rock, It Takes Alot to Laugh
and the show was endless. As is the Student Newspaper Coverage of the Show. I'd see the show nine nights later with Rick Sullivan (who I still talk to 40 years later!) from the front row at the Ocean State in Providence  and see Tiger Rose, Promontory Rider with Robert Hunter in the JGB, but I'd trade it for this show. Heres 2-17-80   According to JGMF http://jgmf.blogspot.com/2016/02/quite-little-cash-cow-jgb-early-1980.html, this show brought the Band a cool $10,000.

Note that Dead wordsmith supreme Howard Weiner devotes Chapter 4 of his Positively Garcia book about this show, calling it one of the best Garcia Band shows ever (4th!) and since you really should support Dead writers, I'll only give you a snapshot of his writing below. Just buy his books!

Also please thank Keith Gatto for recording this show. It's a wonderful audience.

The Jerry Garcia Fans Strike Back: Buffalo, November 30, 1977

Just a few weeks after the three monster Dead November 4-6 shows in Upstate New York (all officially released by the band), and six month after the famous May 9 Grateful Dead down the street in Buffalo, Jerry Garcia took the JGB back to the New Gym at Buffalo State on November 30, 1977.
There is a sweet audience recording here in FLAC and MP3.  All when well until...

All hell broke loose in Buffalo.

The usually reliable and loving Buffalo Spectrum newspaper send out a reporter, who in the midst of one Garcia's most awesome eras (and month!) and in the same state wrote an incredibly terrible review of Garcia. All I can say is fuck that guy.  As did all of these letters to the editor written the very next issue.

Reading these letters makes me proud to be a Deadhead and almost (just almost) makes me want to move to Buffalo.

Great Tale of Jerry Garcia for $1 at Concord September 7, 1981

Cool shirt Jerry

I could never write about this show that I attended (a busy few weeks with Phil playing with Jerry, this show, and first three shows at the Greek) better than Lost Live Dead.

Making It Better: Reconstruction At The Cotati Cabaret, March 8-9, 1979

Early in their brief 1979 career (started on January 30 and 31 in Berkeley), the awesome, incredible, fucking great, mindblowing, fun band named Reconstruction launched into Jimmy Cliff's Strugglin Man and started a short history of runs at the very very small Cotati Cabaret.

There is a great analysis of the venue here:

There is a great write up of Reconstruction here:

Light In Ashes says in here , the very first weekend show of Reconstruction was Friday, March 9 at the tiny Cabaret Cotati.

A Weekend in Rhode Island with Bobby's Band and Jerry's Band, March 10-11, 1978

So Rick Sullivan, formerly of Itheca, Berkeley, and Cumberland (?) Rhode Island, and my first tape trader pal, invited me down to his homie turf to see the newly formed BobWeir Band and the Jerry Garcia Band, on a weekend of my freshman year in college in Maine.

Time is a stripper, doin just for me. Enjoy this little wall down memory lane, almost forty years to when you could see Bobby and Jerry and their bands a few miles apart in little venues in Rhode Island.

By the way Love in the Afternoon cooked, as we seat in row 1 !!! thanks Rick and Rhapsody in Red rocked that night so hard.   Jerry did a little interview too (see youtube above)

Jerry Garcia Leave's LSD's Heights for Ocean Depths, JGB in Hawaii, May 1990

Jerry Garcia may have spent one of the happy weeks in the last five years of his life when he took a working vacation to Hawaii in May 1990.  He book-ended his scuba vacation  on the Big Island with a May 12 show at the Waikiki Shell a few hundreds yards from Dick Latvala's job at the Honolulu Zoo http://deadessays.blogspot.com/2011/02/dick-latvala.html  Shout out to Dick. And then a May 20 benefit in Hilo on the eastside of the Big Island where Jerry loved to scuba dive.  All those tunes are here     Apparently coming very soon is a Garcia Live volume 10 of the Hilo show. Buy it, its a bargain  for a very special very long Jerry show.  Give Jerry's kids a few dollars for the love he gives you.
