25 Years Ago: Best Days Between, August 22, 1993 Autzen

Your assignment today is to listen to maybe the best version of the last Garcia/Hunter masterpieces, which occured almost exactly 25 years ago today.  Just click above, and I got you covered.

This is the first 1993 show I have covered in Grateful Seconds.  I'm not an expert in late period Dead, since I only saw one more show after July 24, 1987 with Dylan, but here goes.

This is certainly a show of the year candidate, third in Deadbase behind 9-22 (MSG, David Murray, Dark Star, you get the drift) and 3-24 (30 Trips at the Knick).

And you get the all-time Days Between here (top in Deadbase too).
Hear it all here music

Since its 1993 you get a  late period Help on the Way suite, newspaper coverage, fanzine reviews, and all kind of bells and whistles.  About 43,000 paid $1.1 million to attend this show.

RIP to the kids who died driving back from the show. Still so sad after 25 years.

Dead Sell-Out Iowa City, February 24, 1973

Here is probably some Dead items you never saw before. A color copy of the February 24, 1973 Poster at the University of Iowa, found deep in their digital online archives and a snice little review of this concert that we don;t know everything about.

For a long time, there were only four songs in SBD from this show, but in the past few years an audience appeared of much of the show.  Raead about it here from the experts at http://deadessays.blogspot.com/2009/12/from-incomplete-show-files-february.html

Since it is February 1973 the Playing in the Band is suberb, you can get the tunes here

Wish I had more information, but what we have here is cool enough for me

For more on more famous Iowa Dead shows in this era read http://www.gratefulseconds.com/2016/05/a-tale-of-two-playgrounds-grateful-dead.html

Obscure Little Santa Monica Show with 30,000 Downloads, March 7, 1970

Between Fillmore East February and Harpur in May, there is this quirkly incomplete rare look at March 1970 in Santa Monica. I kind of really like audience tapes of this era with Black Peter leading the way.  So fun to hear it from the fan point of view.  Who knows the whole set? Wish I did
Crowd is sure quiet for a rock n roll show in 1970.

I recommend the one recording of this show, its here

Even weirder is that was promoted by Concert Associates, A Filmways Company (as in The Beverly Hillbillies, a Filmways presentation)

Presented some Daily Bruin and LA Times information, and currrent industry flavor

Same Night Downton about Ten Miles Away from SM Civic

From Deadlists

3/7/70 - Saturday posters tickets, passes & laminates
One [27:57] ; Black Peter [8:54] % China Cat Sunflower [3:18] > Jam [2:01] > I Know You Rider [4:28] > High Time [5:48] ; Tuning (1) [3:16] ; Dire Wolf [0:12#]
Two [47:23] ; Not Fade Away [#5:13] > Drums [4:59] > Good Lovin' [2:53] > Drums [0:13] > The Other One [6:#48] > Not Fade Away [2:26] > Turn On Your Lovelight [24:51#]
Comments This tape has circulated for years mislabeled "3/8/70" but Joey Newlander's archival research demonstrates that this show actually took place on 3/7/70. There are probably songs missing before and after Black Peter; on the circulating copy the Dire Wolf breaks off and the tape cuts in on the beginning of NFA. There must be tunes lost after Dire Wolf as well. (1) Includes New Speedway Boogie Tease.
It is impossible to tell whether the two fragments come from one set or two. There is a tape flip 3:27 into The Other One; probably not much is lost here.

The Eleven, Plus One, Phil Lesh & Friends (The Q) Free Soundboard Releases, 2000-2001

Phil Lesh & Friends in 2000-2001 are the best years of the best post-Grateful Dead spin-off group (to me).  Luckily, Phil decided to release 12 soundboard CDs free at the time for the enjoyment of us all.

I wrote about Phil Lesh & Friends once before, http://www.gratefulseconds.com/2016/10/the-best-phil-lesh-friends-show-ever-12.html.  But if you want to swim in this river, you can have all 12 of these shows  MP3 for all shows, FLACs can be downloaded on archive.org (links on each show)

Official Free Phil/Cygnus Productions soundboards from here on:
Thanks to the philzone.com website for providing all these back in the day.
