Ordinarily, I'd tell you to read the FAQ. But this seems like an
opportune time to repost .t's top 25 tapes of the moment, from a
  moment over two years ago!

Subject: tiedrich's top twenty-five shows -- a whole new can of worms

I had so much fun following (and commenting) on the responses to my top
ten list -- and there really were many thoughful and reasonable
contributions -- that I thought I'd keep the ball rolling and lengthen the
list.

This was a much harder task. First of all, I've never really thought past
a top ten before. Secondly, once you get past the first twenty or so, the
list really becomes arbitrary (ha! as if this whole effort isn't just a
wee bit capricious). You could really argue that most of 1974 belongs on
this list. One the other hand, with the exception of 8/6/71 (and maybe
4/5/71 and 8/24/71), I still feel strongly that no 1971 show deserves a
spot here. Note, however, that -- lordy! -- I've put one 1977 show in the
top 25, though probably not the one most folks would pick.

I know folks will question the inclusion of the 1975 Great American Music
Hall show, but listen again: it's an almost-perfect show with an extremely
high-energy level. Help/Slip/Franklin's, Eyes Of The World, ahhh!

And to everyone who has emailed me to ask, "hey, what about <insert
favorite show here>? What are you, nuts?" -- remember, this is no one's
list but my own. It's highly personal and based on my peculiar taste. This
ain't science, folks!

Well, what the hell, here's the next installment in this fool's errand:

        Contenders to the throne:
        ===========================
What do we do about these? These are shows from which we only have
30- to 45-minute surviving fragments. They're hotter than hell, and if
the complete shows are anywhere near what circulates they deserve a
spot on the list. As they stand, however, they're too short to evaluate.

    04/24/70 Mammoth Gardens, Denver, CO
09/29/69a Cafe Au Go-Go, New York, NY
09/17/70 Fillmore East, New York, NY

OK, gang, let's have at it ...

40th Birthday of my 18th Show: November 14, 1978 Boston Music Hall

Night two in Boston was my 7th show of the year, 18th in all and I was still 19 years old.  These new shows were low on my list of shows I had been to between 1976-1978 but still sounds good when I play them today.  After seeing the clever I Need A Miracle>Good Lovin' on SNL on Saturday night, the set one closer with Miracle is pretty rockin' which you can hear above.

I have included the Steve Rolfe recording mastered by Charlie Miller which you can listen to on its 40th Anniversary Day.   Big feature of this night are Dick Latvala's notes and the nifty audience tape

More College Madness: Franklin & Marshall April 10, 1971

Music from the Show

The College Dead appeared at so many spots in early 1971, thanks to the genius booking plan of Sam Cutler.  College gigs guaranteed lots of college students as well as guaranteed strong income for the band.  Also the shows tended to be a little more mellow and shorter and easier to play at.  And also there were coeds.   Lucky for us there were also college newspapers with interesting Grateful Dead info and other 411.

Later in the month, the band would also hit Bucknell (4/14), Alleghany (4/15) Princeton (4/17), SUNY Cortland (4/18) and Duke (4/24) before finishing up with the famous Fillmore East shows.

After a couple of times in NYC and Boston, the Dead took a night off and drove (flew) down to Lancaster, a little under 400 miles for one more Saturday night college show. Two nights later they would be in Pittsburgh, about 240 miles west. .
